# Getting Started with Planning a Social Event

* [ ] **Look over the** [**Organizer checklist**](/other/archived-pages/social-and-community-events-guide/event-role-checklists/organizer.md) to get an idea of what you’ll need to do.
* [ ] **Establish goals for the event** in advance to help with preparation and planning.
 * Is the goal of this event simply to connect socially, or to accomplish work tasks?
* [ ] **Start outreach to fill the necessary** [**event roles**](/other/archived-pages/social-and-community-events-guide/event-role-checklists.md), prioritizing the host and cook roles.
 * **Add the roles to the** [**Volunteer Sign-Up sheet**](https://volunteersignup.org/LBJQB) and send a message in Slack to let people know they can sign up if interested. This would be a great way to contribute for those who aren’t comfortable with canvassing.
* [ ] **Confirm the event location** so it can be used on the event promotional materials.
 * Make sure the location is somewhat centrally located to metro Denver.
* [ ] **Get the word out about the social** using the [event marketing checklist](/other/archived-pages/social-and-community-events-guide/event-role-checklists/organizer.md) as a reference. It’s good to start doing this at least a week in advance so people can plan ahead.
* [ ] **Establish a rough headcount** by creating an RSVP link via the [Volunteer Sign-Up sheet](https://volunteersignup.org/LBJQB)
* [ ] **Start sharing the** [**event role checklists**](/other/archived-pages/social-and-community-events-guide/event-role-checklists.md) once you’ve found people to fill those roles!
